Shakespeare Controlled Assessment - Draft Despite fate’s grasp on Romeo and Juliet being clear from the beginning, their choices in the play cause fate to build momentum and accelerate their lives to their inevitable end.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE1594INTRODUCTIONAUTHOR BIOGRAPHYPLOT SUMMARYCHARACTERSTHEMESSTYLEHISTORICAL CONTEXTCRITICAL OVERVIEWCRITICISMSOURCESFURTHER READINGThe exact year in which William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet is unknown, but it is definitely one of his earlier works, and one of only two tragedies written in the period from 1590 to 1595.

The other tragedy, Titus Andronicus followed the conventions of Seneca and Marlowe, i.e., built around a single heroic figure, but Romeo and Juliet was innovatively different.

The door is Luhrmann representing Shakespeare’s teaser of a nonviolent end to the feud.

However violence is apparent throughout the families and it is this violence which will allow fate to succeed.

The final section of the book contains an exhaustive explanation of how to write top grade essays on the play, including sample A* answers as well as summaries of significant literary criticism.

There are plenty of pointers to help students develop their own personal responses, including thought-provoking thematic questions.
